Building a Healthier Community, Together
Mount Olive Township is proud to be recognized as a 2025 Healthy Town to Watch through the New Jersey Mayors Wellness Campaign (MWC). This designation recognizes municipalities that demonstrate a strong commitment to improving the health and well-being of their residents through innovative wellness initiatives, community partnerships, and evidence-based public health programs.
This achievement reflects the dedication of Township leadership, the Health Department, municipal staff, community organizations, local businesses, volunteers, and residents who work together to create opportunities for healthier living.
What is the Mayors Wellness Campaign?
The Mayors Wellness Campaign (MWC) is a statewide initiative that empowers communities to improve health outcomes by promoting healthy lifestyles, expanding access to wellness programs, and encouraging collaboration between local government, healthcare organizations, schools, businesses, and community partners.
Each year, municipalities that demonstrate measurable efforts to improve community health may apply for Healthy Town recognition based on programs and initiatives completed during the previous calendar year.
Being named a Healthy Town to Watch recognizes communities that are making meaningful progress toward creating healthier environments and improving quality of life for residents.
Data-Driven Community Health Planning
Our initiatives were directly informed by community needs identified through comprehensive local research and structural frameworks, including:
- Community Health Assessment (CHA) & Local Health Assessment (CHIP) to identify priority health concerns.
- Formalization of the Mount Olive Mayor's Wellness Committee to oversee implementation.
- Adoption of a Mayor's Wellness Resolution by the Township Council to secure ongoing programmatic support.
Key 2025 Wellness Initiatives
1. Senior Fitness: Chair Yoga for Older Adults
To promote physical activity, mobility, and social connection, the Township launched a targeted 8-week Chair Yoga program.
- Impact: Consistently drew 25–30 participants weekly, vastly exceeding baseline expectations.
- Sustainability: Due to overwhelming demand, Chair Yoga has been transitioned into a permanent community wellness offering.
2. Community Engagement: Mayor’s Wellness Walk
Hosted at Turkey Brook Park, this flagship event centered on active movement and preventative health education. The day featured:
- A one-mile community walk and trail-side exercise stations.
- Live dance fitness demonstrations and local wellness vendors.
- Targeted sun safety education aligned with Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
3. Food Security & Workplace Wellness
- Addressing Food Insecurity: Partnered directly with the Mount Olive Food Pantry via coordinated community food drives and resource distribution outreach.
- Employee Wellness Program: Launched a workplace initiative for municipal staff featuring "Wednesday Wellness" educational emails, monthly themes, and interactive events to promote healthy choices.
Looking Ahead
This designation is a milestone, not a finish line. The Health Department and its partners remain committed to expanding accessible, life-stage wellness programming, reducing barriers to care, and fostering a healthier environment for everyone who lives, works, and visits Mount Olive.
