A Message from the Chief

Welcome to Mount Olive Township and Thank You for visiting the Police Department’s webpage.  This page is a resource designed to provide viewers with valuable services, links, and information.  I hope you find what you need during your visit.  However, should you need further assistance with a non-emergency matter, please don’t hesitate to call our Communication Center directly at 973-691-0100.  Our personnel are here to help you or direct you to someone else who can assist.  If you have an emergency, please dial 9-1-1.

On December 1, 2023, I was sworn in as the new Chief of Police of Mount Olive Township Police Department (MOPD). I am humbled by this honor; however, I am very proud and excited to lead MOPD > Moving Forward.  In my 30 years of service here, I have learned first-hand, repeatedly, that our agency’s success has been built by our members.  They are our greatest asset.  Our team of highly qualified, trained, and supervised individuals are committed to providing you with the highest level of assistance, service, and protection as pledged in our Mission and Core Values.  I encourage you to take a moment to engage with any one of our outstanding personnel and find out for yourself.

Because our personnel are the foundation to our success, we remain dedicated to our department’s enduring commitment to our recruitment, selection, and background processes.  We carefully devote a great deal into hiring only those candidates who possess the highest morals, character, work ethic, and empathy.  I also recognize that our profession is always changing, and we need to evolve with it.  Therefore, a key to our future success will be realized through a progressive Recruitment Plan.  A primary goal of this plan will be to expand and attract a more diverse candidate pool more representative of our population’s demographics.   To that end we will explore new methods and approaches to help increase the appeal of our organization and profession.

I believe my greatest responsibility as Chief of Police is to ensure the delivery of high-quality service and the preservation of the safety, health, and well-being of all people in our community. To attain these priorities, the Mount Olive Township Police Department will remain committed to the development and growth of our employees. We aim to instill in them the highest standards, many of which are emphasized & required through our continued voluntary participation in the NJSACOP LEAP accreditation programs.  We will also continue to invest in our personnel by providing Mentorship, Training, Coaching, Professional Development, and Leadership opportunities to support their ongoing progress.  Finally, we will pursue new opportunities to improve the Health & Wellness of our personnel so they can better serve you.

I have also made it a priority to address our increased roadway populations, traffic, and the concerns expressed in our 2023 Police Community Survey.  A major step toward this goal will be to revitalize our Traffic Unit and the personnel dedicated to this function.  The Traffic Unit will concentrate on improvements starting with Education, Engineering and Enforcement, also known as the 3E’s.  Additionally, we will also seek new cooperatives with neighboring police departments to quell issues.  I am also dedicated toward our continued participation in roadway safety campaigns via state and federal Highway Traffic Safety grants and look to explore new funding opportunities as well.

MOPD has also been very proactive, building a robust range of Community Outreach services.  One very important new service MOPD will begin to provide in the fall of 2024, is an innovative Mental Health & Substance Abuse program.  In late 2023 MOPD was one of two cities in NJ to be awarded a federal mental health response grant from the BJA - Bureau of Justice Assistance called Connect & Protect.  This award will help fund two full-time clinicians who will be tasked with responding to calls for assistance related to Mental Health/Illness and EDP.  Additionally, these highly trained individuals will follow-up and check-in with clients/patients who need further assistance and ongoing support.  I look forward to announcing the start date soon. We remain committed to providing these effective services while also looking for new opportunities to create/build relationships and support previous initiatives.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message.  Mount Olive Township is a wonderful place to live, work and visit because of all of you, our citizens.  I look forward to connecting with you in our community, very soon.

Best Regards,

Michael T. Spitzer
