Captain Michael Spitzer

Prior to his law enforcement career Spitzer earned a full athletic scholarship to Rutgers University where he was a 4 year letter winner for the football team. He currently holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology.

Spitzer began his career with Mount Olive in August of 1994 after graduating the Morris County Police Academy‘s 44th Basic Class. He served 12 years in the Patrol Division prior to his transfer to the Communications & Records Division. He was promoted to Sergeant in November 2001, to Lieutenant in September 2011, Captain in August 2016 and Chief of Police on December 1, 2023.

During his career he has received several departmental awards including 2 Life Saving awards, an Educational Achievement award, 3 Physical Fitness awards, 2 Honorable Service awards, a Grand Cordon award & 2 Exceptional Duty awards. He also received a Program Development Award for the artwork and design for the department’s current uniform patch in 1998. Spitzer was also honored in 1999 with a Knights of Columbus Council #5410 Shield Award for a Counterfeiting Investigation and a 2019 Knights of Columbus Council #6100, Police Officer of the Year Award. 

Spitzer is a former Field Training Officer, Physical Training and PR-24/MEB Baton Instructor. He is also an NECI Certified 911, EMD and Communications Training Officer Instructor. He has also received extensive crash investigation training through Northwestern University including Crash I, Crash II, Vehicle Dynamics and Accident Reconstruction.

In December 2010 Spitzer was assigned as the department's initial Accreditation Manager & lead his agency to their first accreditation award on February 14, 2013.  He is a strong advocate of Risk Management philosophies and supports the objectives and practices encouraged by of the NJSACOP LEAP (New Jersey State Association of Chiefs Of Police - Law Enforcement Accreditation Program) and the MCJIF (Morris County - Joint Insurance Fund). Spitzer is also a former committee member, assessor and program manager for the NJSACOP ACE (Accredited Chief/Command Executive) Certification Program and has been certified twice for NJSACOP ACE. The Mount Olive Township Police Department is proud to have achieved our 3rd (third) Re-Accreditation Certification in March of 2022 under the leadership of Lt. Michael Cordileone and Sgt. Marianne Wurtemberg. The department is also actively pursuing PSAP Accreditation through NJSACOP under the management of Sgt. Eric Anthony.

Spitzer has attended several executive level leadership courses which include (but are not limited to) the NJSACOP (West Point) Command and Leadership Program, NJSACOP Police Executive Institute, NJSACOP New Chiefs Orientation, NJSACOP Normandy France Executive Leadership Experience, FBI LEEDA Command Institute for Law Enforcement Executives, Penn State Public Safety Institute’s and NJSACOPS's budgeting for Law Enforcement Executives and Richard Stockton University’s Liability Mitigation Certification. Spitzer graduated from Rutgers School of Public Affairs Administration as a CPM (Certified Public Manager) in May 2015 & successfully completed a certification with Rutgers Center for Government Studies as a RPPS (Registered Public Purchasing Specialist). He was awarded certification by the State of New Jersey as a QPA (Qualified Purchasing Agent) in January 2018. He has also received a certificate from PowerDMS as a Content Management Specialist.

In December 2023 Spitzer was promoted to Chief of Police
